Joe Andrew, the head of the Democratic National Committee from 1999 to 2001, will switch his endorsement from Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) to Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) today, The AP reports. Andrew is set to hold a press conference today and is writing a letter explaining his switch that he says he plans to send to other superdelegates.
"I am convinced that the primary process has devolved to the point that it’s now bad for the Democratic Party," Andrew told The AP. "A vote for Hillary Clinton is a vote to continue this process, and a vote to continue this process is a vote that assists [Sen.] John McCain (R-Ariz.)."
This is a blow to Clinton. It was former President Bill Clinton who appointed Andrew to the DNC. Andrew’s shift in support undermines Clinton’s argument that she now has the momentum and Democrats are worried about Obama’s electability. Andrews, however, told The AP that Obama’s handling of the Wright controversy over the past few days was one reason he switched.
