Missouri Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D) is an African-American politician, a Methodist pastor and a Hillary Clinton supporter. So when he weighs in on the controversy surrounding Barack Obama’s ties to his former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, it’s probably worth noting.
From an interview this afternoon with MS-NBCs Andrea Mitchell:
I would not denounce, you know, nor defend Reverend Wright. I think as a pastor he has the right to say whatever he chooses. There’s always been a freedom in the black church that many of us are going to always want to protect.
This controversy should never have surfaced in the first place as far as I’m concerned, because it was something that took place inside the Trinity Church in Chicago. And the only people, really, who can say something one way or another are the members of that church. The rest of us, I think, are trespassing.
