Long-time Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens (R) was convicted Monday on all seven charges of providing false statements on financial disclosure forms. The seven-term senator was charged with accepting $250,000 worth of gifts — including extensive renovations on his home — from a friendly oil executive. Stevens had argued that he was unaware that he hadn’t paid for the gifts — an argument a federal jury soundly rejected Monday.
The news could mark the end of Stevens’ stint in the Senate, where he is the longest serving Republican. His powerful influence in Alaska dates back to before it was a state.
The pugnacious lawmaker is in the middle of a tough reelection contest against popular Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich (D). No word yet whether Stevens plans to drop out of that race or continue running as a convicted felon.
