As part of their ongoing investigation into the alleged politicization of the Justice Dept., leaders of the House Judiciary Committee today called on Karl Roveto testify before the panel. Led by Chairman John Conyers (D-Mich.), the Democrats want the former White House senior adviser to weigh in on his role in the conviction and imprisonmentof former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman (D).
In a letter (pdf)to Rove, the lawmakers write:
The committee has received sworn testimony and reviewed extensive documents raising serious questions about actions you or your staff may have taken that brought political considerations to bear on prosecutorial operations of the [Justice] Department … Given the importance of these issues to the fair administration of justice in this country, your appearance to answer these charges is imperative.
Not that this request is likely to get very far. Last year, Conyers & Co. tried to compel Rove’s testimony surrounding his role in the firing of nine state attorneys general, but the White House, citing executive privilege, stepped in quickly to prevent it.
Now that Rove has left the White House, perhaps Democrats think he’s easier game, but they shouldn’t hold their breathfor his appearance. White House lawyer Harriet Miers was also a Penn.-Ave. retiree when the administration swooped in last summer to spare hera date before Conyers. Expect the same to happen here.
