Petraeus’ four principles for his potential tenure at Central Command are impressive. First, “Strengthen intnernational partnerships.” Building such a massively multilateral approach “requires robust two-way engagement.” He makes a point of saying it’ll be consistent with “that taken by Adm. Fox Fallon,” the commander cashiered for his conflicts with the Bush administration over Iran.
Similarly, “in most if not all cases, we’ll partner w other U.S. departments and agencies in the U.S. government a take a ‘whole of govt’ … in most cases a military-only approach is not likely to succeed” and he’ll “pursue comprehensive efforts in region — not just the symptoms of conflicts but also their underlying causes” Welcome to a region-wide counterinsurgency campaign.
And of course, his fourth (!) principle will be support for the Iraq and Afghanistan warfighters. Very interesting that he made that his final principle.
