The Sons of Iraq, David Petraeus explains, have “contributed to the discovery” of explosive caches. Now, call me crazy, but doesn’t this not mean what Petraeus thinks it means? After all, the Sons of Iraq are former Sunni insurgents and their sympathizers. Doesn’t it just make sense that they help the U.S. find explosive caches? They’re the ones who used those caches to build and plant bombs.
The Sons of Iraq, furthermore, get money from U.S. commanders. Isn’t it in their interest, therefore, to show those commanders where caches of weapons are? I’m not saying it’s not significant that U.S. forces uncover and confiscate weapons caches. I’m just suggesting that the discovered caches might not carry exactly the same significance that Petraeus implies.
