It’s been a tough year for high-profile Democrats with a taste for prostitutes.
First, there was New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer, now comes news that Thomas Athans, a liberal radio pioneer and the husband of Michigan Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow, was stopped by police in February on suspicion of soliciting a prostitute in a Troy hotel room. Athans admitted to paying a 20-year old $150 to perform a sexual act, The Detroit News reportedWednesday, but he was not arrested. Local police told The Detroit News that they typically go after the prostitutes in such cases, rather than the Johns, though Athans could be called on later to testify against the prostitution ring.
What the police do find serious, however, are driving infractions. Later on the same day that he was stopped for his hotel tryst, Athans was stopped for driving on a suspended license, The Detroit News reported. This time, he got a ticket.
In what could be the understatement of the year, Stabenow’s office issued a terse statement Wednesday:
“This is very disturbing and serious. Obviously it’s a deeply difficult and personal matter.”
We assume the reference is to the prostitute, not the license.
