At this point in the 2006 election cycle, Tom Reynolds (R-N.Y.) was the guy urging all his GOP colleagues to stay in Congress. Back then, Reynolds was chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, charged with making the House as Republican as possible. As Reynolds used to say, his party had "the wind in our face" and the easiest way to hold on to a seat was to keep an incumbent in it.
Of course, the 2006 election didn’t turn out too well for Republicans, or Reynolds — who had to answer a lot of questions about what he knew about the Mark Foley scandal, and barely held on to his own seat.
Today, the NRCC is embroiled in an accounting scandal, and Reynolds doesn’t feel like sticking around. He is set to announce his retirement — the 29th House Republican to call it quits. It all leaves Tom Cole, the current NRCC chair, with more than wind to worry about.
