So much for the ‘big impediment’ I identified yesterdayto Hillary Rodham Clinton’s chances for becoming secretary of state. The AP reportsthat Bill Clinton is willing to open the books on the Clinton Foundation:
Clinton has agreed to release the names of several major donors to his charitable foundation and will submit future foundation activities and paid speeches to a strict ethics review, said Democrats knowledgeable about the discussions.
That appears a bit short of total disclosure, but it’s hardly unreasonable. As the former president has repeatedly noted, no other president has ever released this kind of information.
Furthermore, yesterday, Matt Yglesias wonderedwhether “the kind of freelance foreign policy work that Bill does as head of the Foundation” would be another obstacle for Secretary of State Clinton. After all, wouldn’t foreign leaders naturally view the Clinton Foundation and the Clinton Global Initiative as adjuncts of an Obama foreign policy? According to the AP, Bill Clinton is willing to take action on that as well:
They also said that Clinton would step away from day-to-day responsibility for his foundation while his wife serves and would alert the State Department to his speaking schedule and any new sources of income.
Again, that doesn’t *totally *solve the problem Yglesias identified, but it does provide a path for alleviating it.
