House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) survived a challenge to his leadership position Wednesday morning, “handily” beating California GOP Rep. Dan Lungren, in the words of The Hill’sJackie Kucinich. From The Hill:
Boehner, according to a source, said in his acceptance speech that the energy to rebuild the GOP has to come from House Republicans, and he challenged his colleagues to step up to the plate.
Boehner has been Minority leader since February 2006, meaning the Cincinnati congressman has led the caucus through both the 2006 and 2008 elections. In that time, the GOP went from holding a 26-member lower-chamber majority to trailing Democrats by at least 75 seats. Even as many House Republicans are assailing a Detroit bailout plan as a reward for failed leadership, they don’t seem to be blaming Boehner for the recent tough luck of the party.
By unanimous voice vote, Republicans also chose Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.) to replace outgoing Minority Whip Roy Blunt (R-Mo.), The Hill reported.
