Marc Ambinderreports Sen. John McCain spoke with Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano to congratulate her on making it to the top of President-elect Barack Obama’s list to head the Department of Homeland Security. McCain then released this statement:
Not to be overly cynical — I’m sure McCain is, on some level, happy that his former rival may choose his Arizona colleague for a prestigious assignment.
However, it should come as no surprise that he would do everything in his power to push through Napolitano’s nomination for…just about any position in Washington.
As we’ve written before, Napolitano is easily Arizona’s most popular Democrat, and multiple polls found her leading McCainin a head-to-head match-up for McCain’s Senate seat in 2010.
Anything that gets Napolitano out of Arizona gives McCain much more job security, and with Republican Secretary of State Jan Brewer set to take over the governorship, it signals good times ahead for the state GOP.
