Today, E&E Daily reportsthat there could be an agreement reached on the much-negotiated farm bill by the end of this week. After a meeting last night between Sen. Harkin and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a deal for $10 billion in added spending over the next 10 years may be in sight, says E&E.
It’s a marked turnaround from Sunday when Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) told Brownfield Ag News that there was no movement in sight and blamed the White House for the lack of progress:
[E]very time we sit down, nothing ever happens and we’ve been sitting down for the last couple of weeks. There’s got to be some movement from teh White House and I have not seen that yet…I’d say at this time, at this point, an extension of the present farm bill is the most likely scenario right now. We’ll just have to wait until we get a new Secretary, a new President in the White House, and maybe we’ll have a little bit better chance of a new President understanding the needs we have in agriculture.
