Blackwell Goes to Washington? (Maybe)

Jul 31, 2020
With the country’s political eyes focused squarely on this year’s presidential race, the 2004 contest may seem like ancient history. But several House Democrats are hoping to go back in time to examine some of the voting irregularitiesthat reportedlyplagued the Bush/Kerry race. And who better to know about those than Kenneth Blackwell, former Ohio Secretary of State and 2004 Bush campaign chairman for Ohio?
Trouble is, Blackwell has turned down invitations to appear before the House Judiciary Committee’s subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, chaired by New York Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D). Not to be shunned, Nadler this morning pushed through a measure granting Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers (D-Mich.) the subpoena power to compel Blackwell’s testimony. The vote in the subcommittee was 6 to 4, along strict party lines.
No word yet whether Blackwell might be called to the Hill, as Conyers has not yet committed to using his newly granted subpoena power, according to Judiciary spokeswoman Melanie Roussell. But in this election year, with each party seeking every available chance to embarrass the other, look for the temptation to prove irresistible.
