I was just reading about John McCain’s campaign visit to Ohio today. McCain and his wife Cindy were joined on the trail by former Sen. Mike DeWine and his wife, Fran. A picture of the gang reminded me that I followed the DeWines around for an afternoon of campaigning in 2006.
It didn’t turn out well for DeWine — that’s why he’s former — but Fran gave me a little blue pamphlet, "Fran DeWine’s Family Favorites." It’s the 10th edition of her collection of recipes — paid for by the Ohio GOP and authorized by DeWine’s campaign. As Fran explains: "As the mother of eight children and the grandmother of nine, I have no problem finding someone to cook for!"
There’s something for everyone in here: oatmeal pancakes, roasted carrot sticks, "All Ohio" corn chowder, even dog bones.
My favorite: bubbles. It’s 1 cup water, 1/3 cup Joy or Dawn, and 2 Tblspns corn syrup. "Mix ahead of time. The kids will enjoy blowing bubbles."
