So reports subscription-only IraqSlogger. It seems the governor of the Shiite province of Karbala, a member of PM Nouri al-Maliki’s Da’wa Party, is the subject of an unusual arrest warrant, issued by the theocracy-ensuring Iraqi Supreme Judicial Council.
The confirmation comes after a photocopy of an apparent arrest warrant for the governor had circulated over the weekend in Karbala, appearing Friday night. That document’s veracity was not confirmed, and as Aswat al-Iraq writes, it contained no official case numbers or signatures of any issuing judge. The photocopied document claimed that the Central Investigating Court in Karbala had decided to arrest [Governor Aqil] al-Khaz’ali because he had forged six arrest warrants in the past against members of the Karbala Provincial Council, citing article 289 of the Iraqi penal code, especially the sections dealing with the abuse of authority and the use of forged documents.
Also, the confirmation of the warrant’s veracity? It came from a member of a rival political party. Crank dat rule of law!
