In the interest of keeping you updated on the strange case of two detainees dying Dec. 18 in a Zabul Province prison— it’s unclear whether they were in the custody of U.S. troops or Afghan police — here’s a response I received early this morning from a spokesman for the U.S. military command in Afghanistan:
Spencer,
We take news like this very seriously. We do not want to speculate about events surrounding the joint investigation. It would be inappropriate for us to provide any further statements until the investigation is completed.
For the record, I wasn’t asking for speculation, I was asking for facts. It’s unclear when the U.S. investigation into the incident will wrap up. I don’t want to inundate you with constant no-comments, but I didn’t want you to think I was letting the story drop. When I have something more substantive I will post that as well.
