In case anyone had any doubt that Hillary Rodham Clinton’s ascension to her new job is a foregone conclusion, Sen. Richard Lugar (R-Ind.), the ranking Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, just referred to working with Clinton “when she is secretary of state.” Lugar added that Clinton is “the epitome of a Big Leaguer. Her qualifications for the post are remarkable.”
But Lugar also turns to the issue of the Clinton Foundation, which he calls “a temptation for any foreign government or entity to curry favor” with Hillary Clinton. Apparently the Clintons have given the committee a memorandum of understanding for how the Clinton Foundation’s global activities will be seperate from Clinton’s service as secretary of state. Lugar says it’s a “unique problem” but it “should not be a barrier” to Clinton taking the top diplomatic job. He urges the Foundation to “forswear new foreign contributions” as a way to avoid the appearance of a conflict of interest.
