Fred Jones is a smart guy, so I feel a little guilty about this. But he’s got a really breezy postup at DipNote, the State Department blog, about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In full:
President Bush went to the Middle East recently to help advance peace talks between Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Olmert. Between Tuesday and Friday last week, Hamas fired more than 150 rockets at Israel from Gaza. Israel responded with both limited military actions and cutoffs of supplies to Gaza.
If everyone says they want peace, why is it so difficult to stop the fighting and reach an agreement?
Gee, I don’t know. Maybe because both sides fear and distrust one another, and feel existentially threatened by each other? Or because there are maddenningly intricate issues of history, narrative and justice that both sides feel acutely? Or because peace isn’t something that just happens , but something people have to work for?
Seriously, Fred? Seriously?
