After introducing his family — all of whom seem to be there, I guess this is a big deal or something — Attorney General-nominee Eric Holder began his opening statementby pledging his service would be “fair, just and independent.”
To that end, Holder stressed his service will be about getting the Justice Department back on track and serving the “people” and not a “president.”
He also jumped out in front of his anticipated criticism from his work during the Clinton administration, saying:
“„My decisions were not always perfect. I made mistakes. I hope that enough of my decisions were correct to justify the gratifying support I have received from colleagues in law enforcement in recent weeks. But with the benefit of hindsight, I can see my errors clearly and I can tell you how I have learned from them.
It seems like this is going to be a pretty clear-cut hearing so far, and the only surprises will likely be how straight-forward Holder’s responses are to the various issues that have plagued the Department of Justice under President George W. Bush for the last eight years: politicization, torture, Guantanamo Bay, etc.
