Rep. Mike Pence (R-Indiana) cuts to the chase: Which taxes should we cut first? Why choose, asks Romney. “I’d like to see rates cut across the board, top, middle and bottom, for the American people.” But if pushed, he’d eliminate taxes on savings for people making less than $200,000. “It’s not real expensive.”
The Republican members roll out their first of four citizen-created videos, in which a Georgian small business owner pleads for relief. “I’d like to get more people into Jackie’s store!”
Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) asks the panelists to get specific about the business tax rates we should have. Is the knowledge that the Bush tax cuts will expire in 2010 depressing traders and effecting the economy? Romney suggests cutting them to European levels. “That would make us competitive.” Wall Street’s worries indicate that it’ll be necessary to either keep the tax cuts in the short-term or make them permanent.
Ryan also talked about the level of spending that we’d need: Whitman stays vague. “It is other peoples’ money, or “OPM.” That $1 trillion is hardworking Americans’ money. We need to make it work.” On the tax cuts, she gets more vague still: it’s just important that Congress passes something bipartisan.
“There is fear, or certainty, or doubt,” says Whitman. “Or ‘FUD.’” Has she always talked like this?
