Although Eric Holder has been careful not to say he made a *mistake *in recommending a pardon for the members of FALN, a Puerto Rican paramilitary group regarded by many as a terrorist organization, he’s used some pretty interesting terminology to walk around it.
In response to Sen. John Cornyn’s (R-Texas) question of whether Holder would have recommended pardoning the FALN members after Sept. 11, Holder used the term, “post-9/11 world,” and said:
“„I think that I would have viewed it differently. I think the recommendation that I had made would be different in this way. I think I would have said either this is something we shouldn’t do, or to the extent that there’s a desire to do something, the sentences should not be commuted to the extent that they were.
Considering that a “post-9/11 world” was the terminology used by Attorneys General John Ashcroft, Michael Mukasey and Alberto Gonzales to frame the expansion of presidential authority that followed the Sept. 11 attacks, it’s a little surprising to hear this kind of thought pattern from Holder. Pander-ific.
