For almost four years, the fate of U.S. border agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Alonso Compean had been a sort of cause celebre among immigration restrictionists. In 2005, Ramos and Compean confronted a Mexican drug runner with 800 pounds of marijuana in his truck, and shot him (non-fatally). The man was unarmed, and the border agends got more than a decade in prison.
Since then former Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-Colo.) has repeatedly demandedthat the agents be freed. Former Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.) introduced a Ramos and Compean Act that would have pardoned the men (though this would have been legally impossible). Lou Dobbs occasionally turned his show into an infomercial for the men.
