Another thing Roger Villere, chairman of the Louisiana GOP, said was that Republican National Committee chairman candidate Ken Blackwell would bring his experience with “ballot security” to the job. Because Blackwell’s tenure as Ohio Secretary of State was what turned him into a national Goldsteinfigure with Democrats, I asked Villere to unpack that.
“We need free elections that aren’t full of corruption. This whole election cycle, in Louisiana, that was very important for us. It’s been an under-reported story that we won more votes for Sen. John McCain in 2008 than former President George W. Bush won in 2004. We did that by being real judicious, and looking carefully at areas that were real suspect in their voting patterns.” Villere explained that defeated 1996 GOP Senate candidate Woody Jenkins had challenged his loss to now-Sen. Mary Landrieu (D) in part because of New Orleans precincts that, Jenkins argued, had more ballots cast than voters.
“One of things that Ken has been accused of, by Democrats, was ‘giving’ Ohio to George W. Bush. He didn’t give it to Bush. He held a free and fair election.” The GOP’s 2008 offensive against ACORN, and its challenges of some new pools of voter registrations, are the kinds of things that a Chairman Blackwell might emulate.
