PHOENIX, Ariz. — The McCain campaign has made Sen. Barack Obama’s “celebrity” status and his associations with other celebrities a centerpiece of its attack machine. However, if you’ve been paying attention to Sen. John McCain’s activities over he last few days — I know there’s at least a few of us out there — you’ve probably noticed McCain has been in full-on celebrity-courting mode himself.
First, there’s the obvious: Yesterday, McCain trotted out Reggaetón sensation Daddy Yankeefor a photo-op at a downtown Phoenix high school, and later that night sat down with Jay Leno on “The Tonight Show.”
But that’s not all. This afternoon, McCain attended a fund-raiser at the posh Phoenix Biltmore Resort, where he was introduced by “Law & Order’s” Angie Harmon and her ex-football player husband, Jason Sehorn. In Los Angeles following “The Tonight Show” filming yesterday, McCain held another finance event at the even posher Beverly Hilton, where he was introduced by Patricia Heaton of “Everybody Loves Raymond” Heaton introduced McCain at a fund-raiser earlier in the day in Sacramento, which was also attended by the minor celebrity, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Also present at the Beverly Hills fund-raiser, per the pool report:
Gary “Lt. Dan” Sinise
Dean “Superman” Cain
Jon Voight(naturally)
Jon Cryer
Angie Harmon (again)
Craig T. “Coach” Nelson
George Newburn — who I’m told played the groom in “Father of the Bride” (good eye, poolers!)
Lorenzo Lamas
For good measure, Tori Spelling was spotted entering the Hilton as the poolers left, but wasn’t attending the McCain event.
Granted, none of these are A-listers like Paris, Britney, Madonna, or any other one-name celebrity — but maybe it demonstrates that if you’re a famous politician, you will probably rub elbows with celebrities of one stripe or another.
