The Republican National Committee today blasted out an e-mail attacking President Obama for the “fiscal farce” of holding a fiscal “responsibility summit” at this time, “after Democrats add trillions in new deficit spending and Obama told voters he wouldn’t close the deficit.”
Well, yes. Obama told voters he wouldn’t close the deficit. Last July:
I do not make a promise that we can reduce [the deficit] by 2013 because I think it is important for us to make some critical investments right now in America’s families.
The financial crisis has changed the scale of Obama’s statement, but not the substance. It would be one thing to attack Obama if he was going back on promises to cut spending, but he isn’t.
