Byron York’s report on Republican frustration with Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele is as juicy as it could bewithout actually naming any of the frustrated Republicans. They are:
• “One Republican who has served on Capitol Hill and the RNC” who says that Steele needs to hibernate and build up the RNC staff instead of blathering on TV.
• “Another GOP politico” who thinks Steele has been “very erratic.”
• “A third Republican insider” who thinks Steele’s TV chatter is “hurting the party.”
• “One state chairman” who says that “the clock is ticking.”
The last source is the most interesting, because the state chairman, more likely than not, cast a ballot in the RNC race. What we learn from the other quotes is that Steele is actually pretty safe. No one is willing to go on the record against him. That makes sense — all of the theoretical boost to the party’s image from Steele’s win would be skunked if the party dumps its first black chairman because Rush Limbaugh doesn’t like him.
