DENVER — Well, it all comes down to this.
After a week of hype and slogans — a week that found roughly 15,000 journalists and bloggers descended on the Mile High City to cover the news of the immediate, which is to say, the news of the irrelevant — Sen. Barack Obama, the almost-Democratic presidential nominee, will take the stage shortly to address about 78,000 screaming supporters.
On one hand, those in attendance are so wrapped up in Obamamania that anything that the Illinois senator says will likely be greeted with howls of approval and minutes-long standing ovations. On the other hand, there remains a minority of Hillary Rodham Clinton supporters left unconvinced of his experience and leadership abilities.
Obama is a stirring orator, but it will take more than soaring inflection to win over those Democrats still alienated by the bitter turn taken in the primary — not to mention the nation’s undecided moderates who are looking for a way out of the Bush years, but remain unsure who offers the surest path.
On this night — before his largest television audience to date — Obama’s task is no cakewalk. Take a seat. Get a beer. It’ll be an interesting ride.
