AURORA, Colo. — We are currently awaiting Sen. John McCain’s arrival here at Wagner Equipment Co., a Caterpillar dealer. McCain is scheduled to take a tour and, apparently, deliver remarks about energy independence and the importance of small business surrounded by backhoes and other large bulldozer-like machines. Some audience members will view the speech from platforms set up next to the machines, giving the room the appearance of a construction-themed go-go club.
Listening to McCain’s warm-up music, I couldn’t help but think about how it has changed. In past weeks, it has tended to range from smooth jazz to patriotic country songs. This week, the tunes are decidedly more upbeat — and heavily favoring late-70s rock. Today, we’ve heard Foreigner’s "Double Vision" and Bob Seger’s "Hollywood Nights." Ironically, given the Arizona senator’s recent negativity, "Walking on Sunshine" by Katrina and the Waves has also been in heavy rotation.
But wait, what is this blaring over the PA??? I’d recognize those jangly notes from Slash’s clean-tone Gibson Les Paul anywhere. Surely, there must be some mistake. No, it is…PARADISE CITY?!?! You’ve got to be kidding. This is truly bizarre. Perhaps McCain is reaching out to those who came of age during the post-glam rock era of the late-1980s — like myself. But maybe, sometimes, even a 71-year-old presidential candidate just needs to rock out. Or, more likely, McCain is just leaving the music selection to younger staffers.
