Here at TWI we’ve been discussing how to cover the story of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s rise from relative obscurity to the national limelight as Sen. John McCain’s running mate. In a past lifeat Talking Points Memo, Alaska was an important part of my daily routine. I covered the myriad scandals plaguing the state’s federal delegation, as well as some local cases connected to the bigger picture.
Palin, of course, is an Alaskan through and through — from hunting moose to supporting drilling. Her politics — which have been called “reform” — do not translate immediately outside the context of her home state, whose political system has been so riddled with corruption, that, in the last year, all three members of its federal delegation faced scrutiny following serious accusations of corruption. This is why I’m on my way to Anchorage this morning. To understand Palin, you have to look at her as an Alaskan.
I’ll spend the week speaking with politicians, activists and people in her community — trying to understand who she is, what she did in her time in office and what that could mean for the country if she becomes vice president.
