So says a Quinnipiac University pollreleased Thursday, which found Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) trailing likely 2010 Republican contender Rob Simmons by 16 points, 50 to 34 percent — the worst margin in Dodd’s decades-long congressional career.
But what’s most interesting is how he’s doing with self-proclaimed members of his own party. “Democrats back Dodd by only 58 – 27 percent,” the poll found, “while Simmons leads 87 – 6 percent among Republicans and 56 – 25 percent among independent voters.”
And he’s not faring much better against other possible GOP opponents.
“„Matched against two other possible Republican challengers, Sen. Dodd trails both State Sen. Sam Caligiuri 41 – 37 percent and former ambassador Tom Foley 43 – 35 percent.
Dodd, who chairs the Senate Banking Committee, was ensnared in the AIG bonuses scandallast month after he watered down his own proposal limiting executive pay — a dilution allowing the AIG bonuses to be paid. Only later did Treasury officials step forward to say that they had insisted that Dodd make the changes.
It appears that only the first half of the saga is sinking in with Connecticut voters.
