One difference between Kentucky and, for example, Arkansas, where Republicans are gunning for Democratic Sen. Blanche Lincoln, is that the opposition party has a deep bench of candidates in Kentucky and a seriously lacking bench in Arkansas. Republicans control no statewide offices in Arkansas; Democrats control all the major offices in Kentucky. Republicans are almost banking on a Bunning defeat if the candidate survives a primary, which is why there’s so much focus on making up the loss by defeating Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.).
