*Update: I wrote a second post on this topic after talking with the CJR reporter. Hereit is. *
Reading this postin the Columbia Journalism Review over the weekend, I had to wonder whether what was supposed to be the nation’s premier journalism review hasn’t actually stopped following journalism.
Clint Hendler writes that the Justice Department’s repeated invocation of the “state secrets privilege” under Attorney General Eric Holder hasn’t been getting any media attention, except by some “liberal leaning” outlets — by which he means Glenn Greenwald, who he writes “certainly deserves sole credit for advance the story thus far.”
I guess Hendler doesn’t read much beyond the mainstream media and Salon, and even that he doesn’t seem to read very closely.
As Clint should know, TWI was actually the firstto write about the state secrets controversy in this storyback in January, before even Greenwald picked upon it. About a week later, The New York Times and The Los Angeles Times both ran editorialson the subject. And we’ve followed it closely in at least 17 separate postsever since.
Then in March, Carrie Johnson at The Washington Postpicked up (albeit belatedly) on the state secrets controversy, as I noted in this post. So did The New York Times, again, in this editorial.
The funny thing is, I’m sure Hendler knows that TWI has been closely following the Obama’s use and abuse of the state secrets privilege, not only because the TPM story he references linked to one of my stories last week, which Glenn Greenwald even noted in this post— but because back in February, Clint and I had an e-mail exchange on the subject and I sent him links to my stories. Hendler also follows me on Twitter, where I always post them.
So hey, Clint, what’s up?
