I’m hearing that the next round of trilateral meetings between U.S., Afghan and Pakistani officials to discuss their joint responses to the ongoing insurgencies in south Asia is going to be held from May 5 to 7 in Washington. It’s possible but not confirmed that both Afghan President Hamid Karzai and Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari will come to town. But, like in February, the ministers of defense, foreign affairs and intelligence are heading in. Judging from Zardari’s apparent endorsement of the Swat Valley peace deal with the Pakistani Taliban, there’s going to be no shortage of awkward conversation.
