Related to our piece todayon the silence of Congress even in the face of surging gun violence, Washington Post columnist E.J. Dionne this morningis asking a similar question: Who in Washington will confront the gun lobby over reforms to keep weapons out of the hands of felons and others legally prohibited from owning guns? His conclusion: It should be a top-down effort from a president who, unlike most lawmakers, is decidedly unbeholden to the National Rifle Association:
[Obama] was not elected by the gun lobby. It worked hard to rally gun owners against him — and failed to stop him.
According to a 2008 exit poll, Obama received support from just 37 percent among voters in households where guns are present — barely more than John Kerry’s 36 percent in 2004. But among the substantial majority of households that don’t have guns, Obama got 65 percent, up eight points from Kerry. Will Obama stand up for the people who actually voted for him?
Unless he’s itching for a huge fight with his own party, the answer is likely no.
