Carrie Budoff Brown checks inon something I noticed in February—despite every indication that there would be a health care fight this year, Republicans really don’t seem girded for it. They don’t have any alternative plans that everyone can get behind, and their only external support is coming from Rick Scott. Brown finds that Scott is worried about this:
“A lot of people are waiting to see a bill and there is no bill yet,” Scott said in an interview. “So that will supposedly be the first part of June. My personal concern is that might be too late because it appears this is all going pretty fast. If you wait to get started until there is a bill you don’t like, you are going to have a tough time.”
Brown also gets a spokesman for Rep. Roy Blunt, who’s heading up the GOP health care task force, to admit that they need time to come up with something that’s not just “party rhetoric.”
Newt Gingrich, who’s a more credible expert on Republican health care strategy than he is on most other things, floats a pretty good argument: Republicans can pivot off voter anger and confusion with the government takeover of banks and auto companies to make the case that health care reform would amount to another takeover. Negative arguments like that are clearly better than any positive arguments the harried House Republicans will come up with in this short timeframe.
