Putting an end to the questions about which Republican would replace newly christened Democratic Sen. Arlen Specter (Pa.) atop the Judiciary Committee, Politico is reportingthat conservative Sen. Jeff Sessions (Ala.) will assume the position.
Sessions, whose own nomination to the federal bench was rejected by the Judiciary Committee in 1986, will now become the face of the Republican Party’s strategy against President Barack Obama’s nominee to fill the vacancy on the Supreme Court.
There was talkthat Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) might get a special waiver to warm the seat through 2010, when Sen. Charles Grassley’s (R-Iowa) term as top Republican on the Senate Finance Committee would expire, and Grassley would take the coveted Judiciary position.
Of note, Sessions was one of the most vocal opponents of the 2005 GOP effort to take drastic measures to prevent Senate Democrats from filibustering the judicial nominees put forward by President George W. Bush. With Obama set to name a new Supreme Court nominee to replace the retiring David Souter, we’re about to find out just how much of Sessions’ stand was principle, and how much was politics.
