The only Republican of stature left in my home state is Rep. Mike Castle (R-Del.), a moderate who has nonetheless voted with the solid GOP bloc against President Obama’s big initiatives. According to a new poll from Susquehanna Polling and Research, if the 70-year-old Castle runs for Senate against state Attorney General Beau Biden, he starts off with a 21-point lead:
Mike Castle (R) – 55 percent
Beau Biden (D) – 34 percent
undecided – 8 percent
Obama’s popularity is high (62 percent) in his vice president’s backyard, but Castle has a 27-point lead with independents and support from about a third of Democrats.
Knowing Delaware as I do, this is one of those races where campaigning will matter—Castle has not run against a credible opponent in decades, and Biden has been out of the country, serving in Iraq, for months. But it’s a little whiff of optimism for battered blue state Republicans.
