Rep. Pete Hoekstra (R-Mich.), pushing the Republican billthat would prevent the closure of the U.S. detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba:
“„Releasing hardcore radical jihadists into Michigan or anywhere else in the United States should horrify law-abiding citizens. It would immediately and unnecessarily endanger American lives by sending trained terrorists into the very country that they vow to destroy.
While there’s no set plan for all of the detainees right now, there is absolutely no situation that involves them being “released” without prosecution, much less being shipped into small idyllic towns to start terrorizin’ away. When prisoners are moved from one site to another, they are not “released.” If there was any doubt that this bill was a toothless attempt at scaremongering, well, there’s no doubt now.
In the press conference, Hoekstra compared this situation to the detentions of German prisoners in World War II:
“„In World War II, I don’t think we expected the — you know, you didn’t have the threat from homegrown terrorism. You didn’t have — remember, these folks successfully attacked us on 9/11. Three thousand Americans died. And the threat and the specter of the threat that we face today from radical jihadists is very, very different than the threat that we faced from Germany or Japan in World War II. Putting these people in the middle of our communities puts those communities at risk and puts the people that work at those facilities at risk, because they can be very, very easily identified.
