Over the weekend, noted blogger/hoax peddler Larry Johnson responded to my poston the anniversary of the “Michelle Obama whitey tape” with a new theoryabout the mythical, incredibly damaging video.
Why was the tape never revealed and used? One theory is that the hardline conservatives in possession of the tape did not want John McCain to win, a plausible theory given the hard right’s reluctance in general to aid McCain’s campaign.
It’s at least as plausible as Johnson’s other theories. But why did I bring this up in the first place? One: The “whitey” hoax was a fascinating little election subplot, a race-baiting hoax that made it all the way from Johnson’s blog to the campaign rumor mill to Fox News broadcasts. Two: It’s a quaint story, in retrospect, and the effort to paint Michelle Obama as a hateful, bitter racial separatist seems almost like science fiction today.
