Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.), the upper chamber’s longest serving member, was hospitalized over the weekend for a fever caused by a “minor infection,” his office announced Monday.
Earlier this year, concerns about Byrd’s frailty forced the 91-year-old Democrat to step down as head of the powerful Appropriations Committee. That move hasn’t slowed him down in other capacities, though. Byrd was present during all the Senate’s votes last Wednesday — the last time the upper chamber gathered for roll call votes — and presided over an Appropriations subpanel hearing the same day.
