Just in from Politico: President Obama is set to announce new fuel efficiency standards Tuesday in an effort to defuse automaker criticismsthat a patchwork of state emission standards would force the industry into the expensive task of making different sets of vehicles to meet different sets of regional requirements.
California, for example, has proposed to reduce its emissions 30 percent by 2016, but, under the Bush administration, the Environmental Protection Agency rejected that proposalin December 2007. The Obama plan is intended to make the new emission targets uniform nationwide.
From Politico:
The administration will bill the tailpipe-emissions announcement as historic, because it avoids a patchwork of standards and harmonizes so many stakeholders, including automakers, state governments, the Department of Transportation and the Environmental Protection Agency.
In secret conversations, the Obama administration has lined up support from many state governments and a huge array of domestic and foreign automakers, including GM, Ford, Chrysler, BMW and many more.
And it just might work. The plan already has the support of some of the largest critics of the California plan, including General Motors, Politico reports.
No word yet how this strategy will meld with Congress’ recently diluted “cash-for-clunkers” proposal, which would offer a federal subsidy for drivers who purchase large, gas-guzzling vehicles.
One step forward, two steps back …
