The Republican governor of Alaska hasn’t reacted to the murder of abortion doctor George Tiller, but during the 2008 campaign she did get a chance to discusswhether abortion clinic attackers were “terrorists” and decided to compare them to Bill Ayers.
“„There is no question that Bill Ayers via his own admittance was one who sought to destroy our U.S. Capitol and our Pentagon — that is a domestic terrorist. There’s no question there. Now, others who would want to engage in harming innocent Americans or facilities, that, it would be unacceptable — I don’t know if you could use the word terrorist, but it’s unacceptable and it would not be condoned, of course, on our watch.
Abortion clinic attacks have often, controversially, been defined as terrorismbecause the violence they inflict has chilling effects: there’s no question that there are fewer abortion practices than there would be if doctors were not afraid of being murdered. The Weather Underground’s terrorism was of a different sort — they were feared, but they bombed buildings, not people, and they had no chilling effect on policy. Palin seems to define “terrorism” as an attack on the government or on the institutions of government.
