From the statement just issued by the office of Sen. Robert Byrd, the 91-year-old West Virginia Democrat who was hospitalized more than five weeks ago with a minor infection that grew more serious:
Senator Byrd continues to improve but remains in the hospital while he undergoes physical therapy and treatment for a staph infection. He is not expected to be in the office this week.
It is expected that Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) will manage consideration and debate on the FY 2010 Homeland Security Appropriations bill when it comes before the full Senate later this week. Senator Byrd is resuming some of his official duties while recuperating, including signing several enrolled bills as President pro tempore of the Senate, and working with staff on upcoming appropriations bills.
