At today’s House Judiciary subcommittee hearing on military commissions, Rep. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.), apparently under the impression that a debate about the proper legal process for detainees can be shut down by asserting that some detainees are dangerous people, made a number of statements about Binyam Mohammed, who was detained at Guantanamo Bay from 2004 until his release earlier this year, and how dangerous he is. Lt. Col. Darrel Vandeveld, the former military-commission prosecutor, interjected to say that he was personally familiar with the information undergirding Mohammed’s case and proceeded to say that none of it held water. Among Vandeveld’s explication of Mohammed’s actual offenses: downloading a Barbara Ehrenreich article called ‘How To Build Your Own Home H-Bomb’ as a pieceof “satire.” Mohammed might have wanted to check out U2′s ‘How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb‘ as a corrective, but — oh, wait, he was at Guantanamo when it came out.
“You didn’t challenge any facts,” Franks replied with a glare, after Vandeveld challenged, like, allof them.
