BUFFALO, N.Y. — Ah, the tease. By the time the McCain press corps boarded the Straight Talk Boeing 747 we had been worked up in a frenzy worthy of a Hannah Montana concert. At issue? A reportby Robert Novak that the presumed Republican nominee Sen. John McCain would announce a running mate for his 2008 presidential election.
Rushing to the middle of the plane, we were met by press secretary Brooke Buchanan and the Arizona senator’s consigliereMark Salter after McCain told New York times reporter Elisabeth Bumiller, "What do you want you little jerks?" McCain then merely grinned when asked if he was going to choose his running mate and let Salter and Buchanan do the heavy lifting.
Our trip to Rochester, New Hampshire to a town hall about 28 miles from the summer home of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney led many to speculate that tomorrow McCain would announce the superly tanned former arch-nemesis his running mate.
Sadly there were no last second revelations, only a couple of no comments and from the ever-mischievous Salter which left the press corps– who had been feeling feeling a little like a AAA political team with our colleagues following Sen. Barack Obama across the globe–pretty damn giddy. It’s like Christmas eve. Except, you know, without the wrapping, and songs and family and an X BOX 360–hint, hint.
