Republicans and even some moderate Democrats have blasted it this week, but a $1.2 trillion House proposalto overhaul the nation’s health care system got an enormous boost Thursday when the country’s largest doctors group threw its weight behind the legislation.
In a letter to Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.), one of the bill sponsors, American Medical Association CEO Michael Maves said the proposal will both expand coverage and allow consumers to retain their choice of health insurance plans.
“„We pledge to work with the House committees and leadership to build support for passage of health reform legislation to expand access to high quality, affordable health care for all Americans.
Critics of the bill have said that the inclusion of a government-backed health insurance option would be the death of the private insurance market, and consumer choice — something the AMA doesn’t find to be the case. Of course doctors and private insurers have a long history of doing battle over what services should be paid, so AMA here shouldn’t be confused for an objective voice. Still, the group is among the most powerful lobbies in town, and this endorsement will make it that much tougher for lawmakers to oppose the bill.
