I really can’t foresee a circumstance whereby the Taliban is ever, *ever *justified in executing a captured U.S. soldier. But then, I’m not military “analyst” Ralph Peters, who never met a problem that didn’t unlock itself through the use of indiscriminate violence. Via ThinkProgress, here’s Peters on Fox News contending that if captured soldier Pfc. Bowe Bergdahl is a “deserter” — and we have to wait until “the facts are in,” Peters generously allows, before drawing that wild wild wild speculative conclusion — then “I don’t care how hard it sounds, as far as I’m concerned, the Taliban can save us a lot of legal hassles and legal bills.” Watch:
I have seen absolutely nothing to suggest that Bergdahl deserted his post, but even if he did, it’s shameful to even imply that a just response is for the Taliban to kill him. Bergdahl probably didn’t realize he enlisted in the Red Army, but Peters has other ideas. Meanwhile, here’s Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clintonwith a more sensible statement about Bergdahl:
“It’s just outrageous,” she said. “It’s a real sign of desperation and inappropriate criminal behavior on the parts of these terrorist groups, so we are going to do everything we can to get him.”
