For those of who have found the tone of today’s constant news coverage of the absurd “Lipstick-gate” non-controversy as obnoxious as I have, we can take solace in one thing: it could well be out of the news tomorrow.
Thursday is the seventh anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. This is a somber occasion, to be sure. It could also mean a break from the political cheap shots, attacks and counter-attacks that have characterized the last few days — for neither candidate will want to appear to be playing politics on a day with such profound significance.
In addition to a joint-appearance at Ground Zero, both Sen. John McCain and Sen. Barack Obama will bury the hatchet long enough to appear tomorrow evening at CNN and Time magazine’s “A Nation of Service” Presidential Forumin New York. From a Time press release:
“„Sens. McCain and Obama will appear on stage separately to discuss their respective visions for the role of service in America’s future. Richard Stengel, managing editor of Time, will moderate, and the event will be open to all broadcast networks.
The McCain campaign has just confirmed that the GOP presidential nominee will also appear tomorrow at a morning ceremony in Shanksville, Pa., where United Air Flight 93 crashed in a field.
Then, on Sept. 12, we can look forward to getting back to our regularly scheduled programming of real and imagined smears and squabbling. In addition to paying your respects to those who died seven years ago, you can be thankful for the political radio silence tomorrow.
