Yes, already. Cityview, a Des Moines alt-weekly, talks to Hawkeye State Republicansabout the prospects for 2012 GOP candidates. Former Mitt Romney state communications director Tim Albrecht says of frontrunner Sarah Palin that “the second she touches down in Iowa, you can bet throngs of supporters will be there to greet her.” Former Mike Huckabee state caucus manager Eric Woolsen says “the McCain people handled her all wrong.” Chase Martyn of our sister site The Iowa Independent says of Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R-Minn.), “he’s never going to be the star of the Republican Party.”
Some problems with the list: the jokey inclusion of Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and the mis-reading of Rep. Eric Cantor’s (R-Va.) fundraising totals as a sign of White House aspiration. And the list forgets Gov. Haley Barbour (R-Miss.), the head of the Republican Governor’s Association. I haven’t talked to many Republicans who think he can win the White House in 2012 (unless things get so bad that any Republican could win), but he has a bigger network and fundraising base than any candidate save for Romney.
