A statementthis afternoon from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi leaves no mystery as to where the California Democrat stands on the public insurance optionthat’s been so contentious as the year’s health reform debate swirls on.
“A public option,” she says, “is the best option to lower costs, improve the quality of health care, ensure choice and expand coverage.”
But that’s different than saying that House Democratic leaders will hinge their support for a final bill on whether it includes such an option — like she didlast month when she said, “If we’re going to have real health care reform, we must have a public option.”
This is what it looks like to walk back insistence.
